TIDAL WAVE OF RUNNERS FROM ACROSS THE UK TO DESCEND ON ENGLISH RIVIERA

After a two year hiatus, the Ocean Healthcare Torbay Half Marathon and 10k are set to return to The English Riviera on Sunday 29th September.

A record number of almost 3,000 entrants from across the UK will tackle either the 13.1 mile or 10k route set against the spectacular coastal backdrop of Torbay and Paignton.

The promise of a weekend on the Riviera has attracted entries from as far afield as Yorkshire, Shropshire and Birmingham, with around 20% of participants living more than an hours travel time from South Devon, providing a boost to the regional economy.

There will be many different reasons for participating, but hundreds will be taking part to raise much needed funds for charity. Torbay based Rowcroft Hospice are set to see a huge team of 200 people taking part on the day.

Hayley Townsend, Challenges Fundraiser, Rowcroft Hospice, said, “We’re incredibly proud to be part of the Torbay Half Marathon & 10k, bringing together our amazing community of runners to support Rowcroft Hospice. Every step taken by our runners helps us continue to provide vital care for local families facing the most challenging times. It’s truly inspiring to see so many people come together for such an important cause, and we’re grateful for their dedication and commitment.”

The events are sponsored by Torbay based Ocean Healthcare, who provide carer services across the region.

Paul Insley, Managing Director said, “We’re excited to return as the headline sponsor for this special event in the Torbay calendar. At Ocean Healthcare, our philosophy, “Live Happy, Care Well,” is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that happier people provide better care, and we’re bringing that energy and positivity to this fantastic day!

As the main sponsor, we’re also proud to present the exclusive Carers Challenge, celebrating the incredible carers in our local community, making race day even more memorable for those taking part from the care sector."

In recognition of the support of Torbay Athletic Club, who have been pivotal in helping to bring the event back to the region, there will be a special trophy awarded to the fastest male and female runners who reside in the Torbay postcode area.

Local bragging rights will also be up for grabs in the Kitson Boyce Team Challenge, where groups of four or more will compete to run the fastest combined time. Among the dozens of teams who have entered are Ocean BMW, who are also supporting the event as official vehicle supplier.

Suzi Cumberland, Managing Director of event organisers Taurus Events, summed up the sense of excitement and anticipation of the return of the Ocean Healthcare Half Marathon and 10k, saying, “We have been overwhelmed by the reaction to the events and that so many people are taking on a distance event for the first time. We hope everyone has an enjoyable and rewarding day.”

Both events start and finish on Paignton Green, with the half marathon set to start at 9am and the 10k a few minutes later. Paige Quinn, from Torbay Athletic Club, who won the National Cross Country under 15 titles earlier this year, will be honorary starter for the half marathon, before competing in the 10k. Spectators are encouraged to attend and lend their support to participants.
